MEMORY 7
He's planning feverishly at this stage: he needs a place to stay, ideally for free (he withdrew his savings to come here, but booking a hotel or motel for an undefined amount of time is not really in his means) and ideally out of the way (the other Masters will be great mages; they will either already have strongholds set up, or be booking into hotels themselves -- and that's another risk he can't afford to run, accidentally running into one that way.)
The other Masters are strong enough not to need this level of subterfuge, he can't help but think for a moment, but he quashes the thought with a fresh surge of fury. It's still anyone's war, and the Grail chose him. He'll show them all, and he'll do it from angles they won't expect. This isn't cowardice -- it's only prudence.
The door is opened by an elderly lady -- Martha Mackenzie, he remembers -- and he is ready for her. There's a container of liquid in his hand, and he tilts it so that it catches the light and reflects it into her eyes, layering his voice with the power of hynotism, letting the ripples of the water soothe her, smooth the false memories he wants her to have into her mind. Don't you remember me? he projects. It's your grandson, Waver. I was supposed to stay with you for a few weeks on my break, remember?
It takes a little more push than he'd like to do it, another irritating sign of his lack of power, but it works. Martha Mackenzie helps him up to a strange room he'll claim as his in the weeks to come. Her husband Glen is not home yet, but Waver will greet him at the door, when he returns from work. He almost can't believe how easy it is, how few defenses ordinary people have against this basic mage's trick.
(Most people don't expect someone to come along and commandeer their home, a little voice says in his head, but he quashes it too. Using people well as resources is, to an extent, what a true magus must do in the name of progress.)
MEMORY 8
MEMORY 9
Rider: Both of you, sheathe your blades. You are in the presense of a king -- Iskander, King of Conquerors! In this Grail War, I am of the Rider class.
Waver stares up at Rider, absolutely horrified -- Servants aren't supposed to give away their identities or classes, to maintain an advantage over the enemy. He yanks on Rider's cape.
Waver: Wh-what are you thinking, you idiot!?
Rider...flicks Waver between the eyes with a single finger, knocking him down to the floor of the chariot.
Rider: Fate has brought us together to do battle for the Grail, but first, I wish to make a proposition. What think you of yielding the Grail to me, and joining my army? You would be treated as honored allies, and together we would share in the joy of world conquest!
Lancer: [shaking his head] I'm afraid I must decline. I may give the Grail to but one man: my new avowed lord. Not to you, Rider!
Saber: Did you interfere with our battle mainly to proffer that ridiculous plan? This is a grave offense against my honor!
Rider: Hmm...I'd be willing to discuss terms...
Saber/Lancer: Shut up!
Saber: And further, I am the rightful King of Britain. I could never lower myself to mere retainer, even in service to a mighty king.
Rider: King of Britain, say you...what a surprise! I'd hardly have expected the King of Knights to be a little girl.
Saber: Then would you like to taste this little girl's blade, King of Conquerors?
She brandishes her blade. Waver picks himself up just in time to see this and is understandably dismayed.
Rider: Hahh...I suppose negotiations have failed. Such a waste. What a shame...
Waver: RIIIIDER! What is wrong with you!
Waver starts hammering on Rider's side with his tiny fists . . . only to be interrupted by an amplified -- and unexpectedly familiar -- voice. The speaker (Kayneth Archibald, Waver's evocation professor) is unseen, talking from some hidden vantage point. Waver, and the other combatants on the ground, glance around wildly; Waver, now clinging to Rider's cape, almost trying to hide behind him, begins to shake with fear.
Kayneth: So you were the one, eh? I'd wondered what madness had compelled you to steal my relic. I never imagined that you yourself planned to enter the Holy Grail War...Waver Velvet. How would you like me to tutor you privately? The true meaning of the slaughter between magi -- I will pass the terror and the pain of the kill onto you without any reservation. Be honored.
Waver, still shaking, subsides to his knees on the floor of the chariot, clutching at his hair; he's on the verge of tears. There's a warm weight on his back, knocking him out of the terrified spiral, and he turns to look -- it's Rider's hand, and Rider is smiling down at him.
Rider: Mage! So you were to be my Master, rather than this boy. That's absurd...only one brave enough to ride into battle at my side can be my Master. A coward, without even sufficient courage to show himself, is nowhere near being worthy! Gahahahahaha!
Kayneth: Tch!
Waver's shocked, touched by the defense, and angry about being touched by the defense and showing his fright so publicly in front of Kayneth . . . the memory cuts off.
MEMORY 10
MEMORY 11
Waver feels sort of closed-off and numb and unhappy through this whole process. There's anger there and of course ambition and the need to get out of this situation and make something better of himself, but mostly he feels emotionally hungover seeing all this stuff he grew up with going to other people.
